Chorale – For Jazz Combo
“Chorale” is a chamber-jazz work based on a section of music from Bela Bartok’s “Concerto For Orchestra”. (Mvt. 2 – Giuoco Delle Coppie) The piece will require the ensemble to play together as a cohesive unit to create subtleties of phrasing and nuance. Hopefully, creating a performance where the sum is greater than the individual parts. I believe it is quite a departure from the bebop head-solos-head format.

The blowing section features odd phrase lengths thus challenging the improviser to abandon standard four-bar phrasing.
While this piece takes many liberties with Bartok’s original work, I strongly suggest that you listen to an original recording of this work for your inspiration/education and to gain a sense of from where my inspiration came.
